Hungarian election: Madjar says PM Orban admits defeat

In Hungary, the head of the opposition Tisza party, Péter Madjár, said that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had conceded defeat in parliamentary elections.

“Just now, Prime Minister Viktor Orban congratulated us on our victory by phone,” Madjar wrote on his Facebook.

Orban said the election results were clear. He also confirmed that he welcomed the winning party.

Voting has taken place in Hungary in the election for the 199-seat parliament. It started at 6:00 local time (7:00 Kiev time) and ended by 19:00. Voter turnout reached a record high, reaching 77.8 per cent by 18:30.

According to Hungary’s National Electoral Bureau, after counting more than 67 per cent of votes, Tisza wins 137 seats in parliament, while the ruling Fidesz party wins 55.

Under the electoral system, the majority of deputies – 106 out of 106 with 193 seats – are distributed among parties that pass the 5 per cent threshold.
