Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz said his country may be forced to “take action” against Iran to ensure Tehran no longer poses a “threat”.
“U.S. President Donald Trump, in coordination with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is leading efforts to achieve campaign goals to ensure that Iran does not again become a threat to Israel, the United States and the free world in the future,” said a statement released by Katz’s office.
“We support these efforts and are providing the necessary assistance, but it is possible that we may soon have to take action again to ensure that these goals are met,” the statement added.
The joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran was halted on 8 April thanks to a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran. It was followed by a truce between Israel and Lebanon, which significantly reduced hostilities in the region. However, both Israel and Hezbollah continue to exchange attacks in southern Lebanon.
“Hezbollah, a militant group and political party that controls much of southern Lebanon, is considered a terrorist organisation in the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted its armed wing but not its political wing.”
