London’s Gitrow Airport has fully reopened after a fire at an electricity substation

On 23 March, London’s Gitrow Airport announced full reopening after a nearly 24-hour closure caused by a fire at an electrical substation.

On Friday, more than 1,300 flights were cancelled and around 200,000 people were left stranded after a fire at a substation 3 kilometres from the airport de-energised the airfield and more than 60,000 nearby properties.

The delays caused chaos-more than 120 flights that were in the air when the closure was announced were diverted to other cities and even countries.

British Airways said it planned to operate about 85 per cent of its 600 scheduled flights on Saturday.

Gitrow said it had added flights to carry an additional 10,000 passengers and employed hundreds of extra workers.

Police said they did not consider the incident suspicious after an initial assessment, although investigations were continuing. The London Fire Brigade said its investigation would focus on electrical distribution equipment.

London’s Gitrow is one of the busiest airports in Europe.
