Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stiore has announced his government’s intention to continue military support for Ukraine in 2026. He announced this on 25 August during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev.
“The government intends to maintain Norway’s extraordinary support for Ukraine next year and proposes to allocate a total of 85 billion Norwegian kroner (about $8.4 billion – ed.) for military and civilian support. This is a critical time in Ukraine’s struggle. While ceasefire and peace talks continue, war continues in Ukraine. In the current situation, it is important to reaffirm our continued strong support for Ukraine: politically, financially and militarily. We consider it vital to maintain our extraordinary support through the Nansen programme,” Stjøre said.
If the Storting (Norway’s parliament) approves the proposal, it will increase the total funding for Norway’s support for Ukraine to NOK 275 billion (more than $27 billion), the government said.
In addition, the Norwegian Cabinet said that, as in 2025, most of the funding will be used for military support.
“Of this funding, NOK 50 billion will be fully used to support international initiatives and procurement in the Ukrainian defence industry, as was the case this year. A final decision on the distribution of the remaining funding has not yet been made. This issue will be discussed in the Storting,” the statement said.
The programme to support Ukraine under the Nansen programme was launched in February 2023. In November 2024, Norwegian political parties agreed to expand and extend the programme for another three years – until 2030.
