Overnight explosion in eastern Poland, authorities do not rule out drone or sabotage

Polish authorities do not rule out that the unidentified object that exploded in the east of the country on the night of 20 August was a drone or could be linked to Russian sabotage. Defence Minister Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysh told V Defence Minister Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysh.

“When it comes to analysing this incident, every scenario must be taken into account. We are a country that borders a place where a full-scale conflict is ongoing,” the minister, quoted by Polish media, said at a press conference. He added that among the scenarios under consideration are the following: a Belarusian drone, a Russian drone, a drone of smugglers or an act of sabotage.

At the same time, the minister said that there are no “signs that would immediately indicate the military nature” of the incident.

Meanwhile, the operational command of the Polish Armed Forces said in the morning that there had been no violation of Polish airspace.

“Regarding the information about the discovery of the wreckage of the object in Lukowski County, we inform you that after preliminary analysis of radar system records last night, no violations of Polish airspace were recorded either from Ukraine or Belarus,” it said.

It added that the object, according to preliminary estimates, may be part of an old engine or propeller, its “detailed analysis” is ongoing.

According to media reports, the explosion shattered windows in three houses, but there were no reports of casualties.

Poland regularly puts aircraft in the air because of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine.

Earlier, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia called on the European Union to build a defence line along the bloc’s border with Russia and Belarus to protect the EU from military threats and other harmful actions by Moscow.
