Pentagon announces personnel changes at the top of the US Army

The Pentagon said General Randy George, chief of staff of the US Army, is leaving his post.

“General Randy A. George will leave his post as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately.Department of War In early September 2025, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the US Department of Defence as the Department of War. Defence Secretary Pete Hagseth and his team will be able to use the titles” Secretary of War “and” Deputy Secretary of War”. Hagseth said the renaming is” not just words, but military ethics.” grateful to General George for his decade of service to our country. We wish him all the best,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wrote on social media X.

The reason for the resignation was not explained. There has been no comment from George yet. There was no indication the move was related to the war in Iran – amid complaints from critics of US President Donald Trump that the conflict is spiralling out of control and creating an energy crisis and economic hardship in the United States and around the world.

US media, citing unnamed US officials, reported that Defence Secretary Pete Hagseth forced George to resign – an almost unprecedented move in a time of war – because he wanted to replace him with someone who would implement his and Trump’s vision for the US military.

In addition, Reuters writes, citing two unnamed Pentagon officials, Hagset also fired General David Godne, who heads the Army Transformation and Readiness Command, and Major General William Green, head of the Army Chaplain Corps.

Randy George was confirmed as chief of staff of the U.S. Army in 2023. The term in the position is normally four years.

George was previously the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army and before that the Senior Military Advisor to the Secretary of Defence in President Biden Lloyd Austin’s government.

In February 2025, US President Donald Trump fired the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (a position similar to the Chief of Staff in other armies), Charles Brown, and five other generals and admirals. The change of personnel policy in the army was announced by US Defence Minister Pete Gagseth. He said that people associated with the policy of diversity and inclusiveness, which was supported by the previous administration of Joe Biden, should leave the army.
