Samsung is investing $1 billion in Helix, a developer of artificial intelligence infrastructure

South Korean company Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of chips and smartphones, has announced its intention to invest $1 billion in the start-up Helix Digital Infrastructure, which specialises in building infrastructure to support artificial intelligence technologies.

Helix was founded in June by the investment firm KKR. The start-up has already raised more than $11 billion in funding, including from Nvidia Corp. and the energy company Vistra.

Global companies are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on building computing capacity against the backdrop of the development of artificial intelligence technologies. According to The Wall Street Journal, investment by the ‘Big Four’ (Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Meta and Alphabet Inc.) reached $410 billion last year, three times the figure for 2022.

According to estimates by economist Stein van Newburg, investment in data centres and related infrastructure will total $10.3 trillion between 2025 and 2032.
