An armed man killed four people, including a police officer, in an office building in midtown Manhattan in New York City and seriously wounded another person before shooting himself, local authorities said.
The incident happened around 6 p.m. on 28 July, during rush hour.
Traffic was blocked on several streets after information emerged about the shooting at the building, which houses the headquarters of the US National Football League (NFL) and a number of financial institutions, in particular one of the world’s largest financial companies, Blackstone Group.
At a press conference a few hours later, New York police chief Jessica Tisch identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident.
According to preliminary information, he came from Nevada in his car, parked it near a building on Park Avenue, entered the lobby of the skyscraper with a semi-automatic rifle in his hands and opened fire without warning.
His first victims were a police officer working security at the building and two other people. Then, according to police, he took the lift to the 33rd floor, where the office of the company that owns the building is located, started shooting indiscriminately, moving along the corridor where his victim was a woman, and later committed suicide before police officers arrived.
The motives for his actions are not yet known. According to Jessica Tisch, he acted Sam, there is information that he had mental health issues.
