The President of Romania has nominated a new candidate for the post of Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has tasked former Development Minister Adrian Veste with forming a government, he announced on 14 June.

Dan said that the previous candidate for the post of Prime Minister, Evgeni Tomac, had declined the position, which is why the choice fell on Veste:

“This is a man who has gone through all the administrative stages — he was a successful mayor, a successful county council chairman, a successful minister, and attracted European funding whilst working on development projects, such as the Brasov airport, which was a success.”

Dan described the representative of the National Liberal Party as a “pro-Western figure” and a proponent of dialogue.

According to a statement by Veste circulated in the media, he wants to form “a political government that will carry out real reforms and keep Romania on a pro-Western path”.

In May 2026, the opposition in the Romanian parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the pro-Western conservative government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, thereby rejecting his austerity policies and plans to sell off state assets.

Bolojan took the helm of the Romanian government in June 2025. His stated priority was to restore the health of public finances. By raising taxes and scrapping subsidies, he managed to reduce the budget deficit from 9.3% of GDP in 2024 to 7.9% in 2025. However, in April, the country’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) withdrew its support for the government due to the austerity measures.
