In the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament, a bill on unification with Moldova has passed the ‘tacit approval’ procedure.
This bill was tabled in the Romanian Parliament on 14 April by MPs from the S. O. S. România party. The government issued a negative opinion on it, as did two relevant parliamentary committees. However, following the expiry of the 45-day period provided for in the Romanian Constitution, the bill was automatically adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, as it had not been considered during a plenary session.
The bill will now be forwarded to the Senate, which must make the final decision.
The bill provides that the Romanian Parliament reaffirms its support for the provisions of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, signed in Helsinki in 1975. It allows for the possibility of changing borders by peaceful means and authorises the Romanian government to begin negotiations with the authorities in Chișinău on unification with Moldova.
In April, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said in an interview with the French newspaper *Le Monde* that unification with Romania would enable Moldova to speed up the process of joining the European Union.
