US ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker believes that US arms supplies to Ukraine will bring the Russian Federation back to the negotiating table, and the visit of US President Steve Witkoff’s special envoy to Moscow could lead to a breakthrough.
President Trump has made it pretty clear that this war in Ukraine will not
going to be resolved on the battlefield, in the end it has to be resolved through negotiations. So I hope that the United States, by selling our weapons to NATO allies, will bring the Russians back to the negotiating table and actually reach a ceasefire,” he said on WHO 13 News.
He said U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is visiting Moscow this weekend.
“I hope he can make a breakthrough,” Whitaker added.
Witkoff’s upcoming visit to the Russian capital was previously reported by US President Donald Trump.
On 29 July, US President Donald Trump said that the deadline by which Russia must make progress in ending the war against Ukraine is “10 days from today”, otherwise he will impose duties and other measures against Moscow. Before that, the US president said he was “very disappointed” with Putin.
The Kremlin said it had “taken into account” the statement of US President Donald Trump. At the same time, the speaker of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that the special military operation continues.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the US President’s words bring him closer to war with Russia. Trump called Russia’s actions “disgusting” and promised to impose new sanctions against Moscow.
