Iran’s vice president announces new restrictions on Strait of Hormuz passage

Iran’s vice president said on 29 March that Tehran plans to revamp the management of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz to ensure long-term economic and security benefits.

“The Strait of Hormuz regime will no longer be the same as in the past,” Mohammad Reza Aref wrote on social media.

He added that the government plans to “turn achievements on the battlefield into sustainable economic and security benefits for the country.”

Aref said efforts by Iran’s enemies to achieve political change in Iran have only resulted in “regime change in Hormuz.”

Iranian sources told dpa news agency that Iran’s parliament was also preparing legislation to introduce a toll system for the waterway, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and natural gas supplies pass.

28 Feb The US launched a joint military operation with Israel against Iran. The strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and hit the country’s military and nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated by striking US bases and infrastructure of Washington’s Gulf allies.

Since the launch of the operation, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the world’s oceans. Tehran has repeatedly attacked ships in the strait.
