The Kremlin said that talks between Russian and US representatives in Miami on ways to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine should not be seen as a breakthrough.
“No, of course. This is a working process… The most important thing was to get information from the Americans about the results of their developments with the Europeans and Ukrainians. And depending on this, we should already understand to what extent these developments correspond to the spirit of Anchorage (in August, a summit of the US and Russian presidents was held in Anchorage, Alaska. Following the meeting in Anchorage, Donald Trump said that no ‘agreement’ on Ukraine had been reached with Russia – ed.),” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked whether the talks in Miami could be considered a breakthrough.
In recent weeks, the US has once again been trying to reach a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev. The week-long talks have produced a document that is more acceptable to Kiev, but there are several contentious issues, particularly over territory and security guarantees.
On 14 and 15 December, talks between the Ukrainian delegation headed by the Ukrainian president and the special representative of the United States president, Steve Whitkoff, and the son-in-law of US President Jared Kushner continued in Germany.
In Miami (Florida, USA) on 19-21 December, the Ukrainian and US delegations held a number of meetings on Trump’s peace plan. The US side also met with representatives of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, there were no visible signs of progress either in the negotiations between the US and Russia or in the meetings between the US and Ukraine. No new upcoming meetings were announced. However, US special envoy Steve Whitkoff described the talks as “productive and constructive”.
