While many have been concerned about data leaks and the dangers of DeepSeek, the Chinese chatbot doesn’t seem to be as dangerous against some of its counterparts. Cybersecurity researcher Surfshark has analysed how much user data is collected by various services.
According to the research, DeepSeek ranks only fifth among the 10 most popular chatbots in terms of the amount of information collected about users. To compile the ranking, experts have studied all types of data that each application collects and advertisers have access to it.
It turned out that Google Gemini receives significantly more personal data than its competitors. The service collects 22 out of 35 types of user data, including sensitive information such as location, user-generated content, contact list and browsing history.
Among the chatbots tested, only Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity collect accurate user location data. In addition, one-third of the chatbots share sensitive data such as location data and browsing histories with third parties. In addition, Copilot and Poe collect device IDs for advertising purposes, while Jasper additionally stores any other data about users’ in-app activity.
